Award-winning pizza & burgers in the foothills

Last year, restaurateur Shawn Randazzo was crowned world-champion pizza maker at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas for his authentic Detroit-style recipe. It is the pizza industry’s most prestigious award.

Now the award-winning pizza is coming to downtown Grass Valley, at KJ’s Pizza & Lunch Express at 121 Neal Street. KJ’s pizza-makers are being trained by Randazzo himself. The restaurant’s motto: “Turning the pizza world upside down.”

Randazzo won for his authentic Detroit-style pizza recipe. Detroit-style pizza, first created in 1946, features dough that’s soft and airy on the inside yet crunchy on the bottom, then lined with pepperoni and edge-to-edge cheese that caramelizes on the crust.

It is topped with fresh ingredients, baked in a well-seasoned blue steel square pan, then drizzled with rich red sauce.

Randazzo’s champion pizza featured a blend of three cheeses topped with chicken breast, bacon, sautéed fresh garlic, onions, chives and BBQ sauce.

He also won the “American Pan” award with a Chicken Caesar Pizza. Lefty’s Pizza in Nevada City has won some awards at the Expo too, such as a regional award for its “Sonoma Valley Pizza”—flat bread with pesto, mozzarella cheese, oven roasted fennel and red peppers, Prosciutto, pine nuts and fresh basil.

Burger Me Honored by Esquire
We crave Burger Me burgers, served at their restaurant in Truckee and now at a new one in Reno, and have named them one of our favorite burgers.

The all-natural burgers are made with fresh ingredients: Meyer natural Angus beef, a Diestel Range turkey burger and bison burger. Burgers are topped with caramelized onions and Niman Ranch bacon, roasted mushrooms or avocado. Sides include sweet potato fries.

Now, Esquire magazine has named Burger Me the Best Burger. It singled out Burger Me’s Bison Burger: “BBQ bison burger gets a layer of smoked cheddar, jalapeño peppers and BBQ sauce.”
