Emily’s Catering & Cakes: creative, inviting menus

CHEF EMILY SCOTT IS A SHINING example of a foothills’ homegrown talent. After pursuing her culinary education in college, throughout Sacramento and parts of Europe, the Nevada County native is back home, expanding her full-service catering business.

Emily’s Catering & Cakes has just opened an enchanting new indoor and outdoor event space in historic downtown Nevada City.

Though Emily will cater anywhere, her new space is a perfect location for weddings, rehearsal dinners, baby showers, corporate events and meetings.

With the new event space and Emily’s culinary talents, the business she runs with her husband, John Arbaugh, is a rising star among caterers in the foothills. “Our food is what sets us apart,” says Emily.

She likes to use fresh, local and organic ingredients whenever possible. Examples: produce from Sweet Roots Farm in Grass Valley, beef from Nevada County Free Range Beef, and Mary’s free-range chickens.

Her menu is creative and affordable. Entrées include “Pomegranate and Porter” BBQ Brisket, Creamy Dijon Thyme Chicken, or slow-roasted Salmon (an award winner at the California State Fair).

Sides might be Yukon sour-cream mashed potatoes or seasonal roasted vegetables. Salad choices include roasted baby beets, arugula and citrus salad, or a lemon Caesar with parmesan croutons.

Emily’s pastries are all made from scratch. She is well known for her delicious wedding cakes—“super moist “ chocolate, raspberry or passion fruit filling and all sorts of butter-cream frostings are options. Her homemade pies and dessert buffets also have a loyal following (sample the Meyer Lemon Bars, Mini Tarts or Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies).

Emily’s customers include individuals and small business owners as well as big enterprises, such as the Amgen Tour of California, SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival and Music in the Mountains’ Home Tour. “We serve two people to over 500,” she says with her energetic smile.

Emily’s new event space at 313 Commercial Street is “icing on the cake” for her growing business. It includes an indoor space, decorated with artwork and attractive lighting, as well as a charming outdoor patio.

She can accommodate more than 30 people indoors and 50 guests outside. Emily says her indoor space is ideal for business meetings, because she’ll be adding optional projection equipment.
