JAX in Truckee: Authentic, affordable & decadent diner food

DOWNTOWN TRUCKEE HAS A RANGE OF quality dining options, from the avant-garde creativity of Stella at Cedar House to the ‘50s-style Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats to the Asian influences of Dragonfly. The juicy grass-fed beef burgers at Burger Me are delicious.

For a bowl of homemade New England clam chowder, chile, mac ‘n’ cheese, meatloaf or other decadent comfort food after a day on the ski slopes, we like to visit JAX at the Tracks.

Housed in an original 1940s diner next to Truckee’s railroad tracks, JAX offers honest comfort food with an interesting twist. “We’re part of the fabric of this community,” says Owner Bud Haley, who opened JAX more than three years ago.

The “regulars” in this sleek, polished-chrome diner include civic, business and political leaders and once—Guy Fieri, host of Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives program. Fieri featured JAX on his program.

“That completely works,” said Guy as he tied into JAX Crab Cake Eggs Benedict on a house-made English muffin. (See a video of the episode below).

Breakfast specialities also include home-made corned beef hash, classic buttermilk pancakes, and biscuits and gravy.

For lunch, the menu includes JAX melts (turkey, cheese, avocado, bacon and a house-made pickle); an original Philly Cheesesteak and signature burgers (using locally sourced fresh ground beef).

The dinner menu features Kobe Beef Meatloaf, Rosemary Roasted Turkey and Seared Ahi Tuna Steak, among other specials. There’s also fried chicken, herb-roasted chicken, steak, baby back ribs and pasta.

There’s wine and beer (including craft brews); fresh squeezed juice; shakes and malts; and Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Prices are reasonable, typically $12 to $18 for dinner entrees. JAX is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
