Five Tahoe ski resorts have more than 300 inches of snow

“Last season, not one Tahoe ski resort broke the 300 inch mark all season,” according to Snow Brains. “This year, we have five California ski resorts above 300 inches, and it’s only February.”

Sugar Bowl has 361 inches of snow, Boreal has 311.5 inches, Sierra-at-Tahoe has 310 inches, Northstar has 307 inches, and Kirkwood has 304 inches. The resorts are in counties such as Nevada County CA, Placer County and El Dorado County.

The Tahoe snow back now stands at 130 percent of average (measure at Phillips Station near Echo Summit), according to a recent survey by the California Department of Water Resources.

“Rainfall and the Sierra Nevada snowpack’s water content are both markedly improved this water year, and storage in the state’s major reservoirs also has increased significantly since January 1,” according to the agency.

“The water content of the northern Sierra Nevada snowpack is 22.7 inches, 120 percent of average for the date,” according to the agency. “The central and southern Sierra readings are 21.6 inches (116 percent of average) and 16.6 inches (106 percent) respectively. One year ago, the statewide, north, central and south readings respectively were 4.1 inches (22 percent of the February 2 average), 4.1 inches (21 percent), 4.3 inches (22 percent) and 3.9 inches (25 percent).”

But it cautioned: “While precipitation this water year is improved over last year, that’s not to say California’s long drought is over.”
