Nevada County Arts’ Events for Summer 2018

Music in the Mountains
MIM’s 2018-19 season celebrates favorite classics, and showcases exciting emerging new artists along with world-class performers.

The new season begins October 18, when MIM partners with the Sacramento Philhar- monic & Opera to present Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, featuring violinist Angelo Xiang Yu, as well as Schumann’s Symphony No. 4.

Happy Holidays follows on December 8-9, with the MIM Chorus singing carols and classics at the Amaral Center at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

On February 14, Russian opera diva Katya Smirnoff-Skyy joins the MIM Orchestra for a night of cabaret. Richard Strauss’ epic Don Quixote and other works featuring cellist David You and the California Youth Symphony are performed on March 10 at the Amaral Center.

Opera lovers will rejoice when Georges Bizet’s famous opera Carmen is performed May 7 at the Nevada Theatre. The season finishes on June 21 with Carl Orff’s rollicking Carmina Burana. For tickets or more information visit MusicintheMountains.org.

California WorldFest
Festival-goers and music lovers descend upon the Nevada County Fairgrounds July 12- 15 for the 22nd annual California WorldFest. The popular music and arts festival is presented by The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

With seven stages of music, more than 50 artists from around the world, and a full workshop and educational schedule, WorldFest sets itself apart from other music festivals throughout the region.

Onsite camping rounds out the true festival- going experience and allows festival-goers a convenient place to rest before the next day’s goings-on. TheCenterfortheArts.org

“I Am Here”
California Arts Council is awarding $13,500 to Nevada County Arts Council as part of its Artists in Communities program, “Belonging.” Artist Ruth Chase will elicit perspectives on how women maintain their sense of belonging in our changing rural landscape. The project includes an interactive public installation called “I Am Here” and a film.
