New Arts Collaborative in Nevada County

ARTISTS ARE AN ECLECTIC BUNCH and bringing them together is sometimes like herding cats, as one Auburn artist puts it. But working together can provide benefits for artists and art groups, such as sharing marketing costs or a box office, as well as securing grants.

The Placer Arts Council helps fill that role. The nonprofit was formed in 1983 to serve as a clearinghouse for information on the arts in the county. It also is a forum for artists and art groups to communicate.

Now neighboring Nevada County has formed a group to promote its arts and entertainment communities. Called the Arts Collaborative of Nevada County, the group will help represent individual artists and more than 18 arts organizations from Truckee to Grass Valley.

“We also are looking to get more involved regionally and promote the arts outside of the county to bring in tourists,” says Peggy Wright, president of the group. Examples include the western county’s Open Studios Art Tour in October, a self-guided tour of 82 artists in 56 studios, that draws visitors from Sacramento, cities in Butte and Yuba counties as well as Reno.

The county’s Arts Collaborative was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the California Arts Council. It was funded with proceeds from the sale of California Arts license plates.

The grant is for the creation of a county-wide arts event calendar and website in addition to the development of a county cultural survey.

Down the road, the Arts Collaborative hopes to work with groups such as the Sierra Foothills Wine Association to promote wine and art.
