Tahoe Maritime Museum recounts Big Blue’s past

The Tahoe Maritime Museum & Gardens provides a cultural experience where Big Blue’s maritime heritage is preserved, enjoyed and passed on to new generations with innovative exhibits and public education.

The museum — a two-story log lodge on a 10-acre campus — showcases a collection of about 30 antique and wooden boats, as well as engines. It is located at 401 West Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City.

“The combination of work, race, and leisure boats in the museum’s collection help us tell the diverse stories of Lake Tahoe’s past,” according to Lora Nadolski, the museum’s executive director.

The collection includes: Shanghai, a 1890s steam launch salvaged from the bottom of the lake; C-Car, a 1969 20’ Philbrick Custom Runabout; Miss Tahoe, a 1939 28’ Gar Wood Runabout; Miss Lakeside, a 1925 27’ Hickman Sea Sled; and Godfather, a 1922 26’ Chris-Craft Runabout.

Build A Canoe
From August 19-24, instructor Mark Adams shows a class how to construct a 15-foot wood and canvas canoe, built in the traditional manner and entirely by hand.

Students will have ample opportunity to help build the canoe. Those who are willing to help pay the cost of materials will be entered into a drawing for the finished canoe.

Adams has been building and restoring wooden canoes since 1989, and he has about 20 in his personal collection, dating back to the 1880s. He holds a degree in Industrial Education and has taught woodworking on and off since 1991.
