Lefty’s Grill: Now serving “the perfect drink”

IN 2008, TWO LEFT-HANDED chefs—John Cammack and Chris Duncan—opened “Lefty’s Grill” in historic Nevada City. The restaurant drew a loyal following for “casual, white tablecloth dining,” including burgers, flat-bread pizzas that won international honors, creative entrees and fresh salads.

Five years later, Lefty’s outgrew its space and moved to 101 Broad Street, with views of gurgling Deer Creek. The space, double the size of its original location, included a stylish dining room, patio and upstairs bar area with flat-screen TVs.

Lefty’s has become synonymous with “the perfect bite,” thanks to its imaginative and seasonal menu. (One recent example: housemade porchetta, slow roasted, then pan seared and finished with blackberry gastrique, white cheddar polenta, roasted carrots and sautéed vegetables.)

This year Lefty’s achieved a new milestone: it now serves “the perfect cocktail.” Customers can order their old, favorite cocktail or a new craft cocktail, just like they can order a “standard” pepperoni pizza but also an edgy Napa pizza from the menu.

In addition, Lefty’s has opened a new, 1,100 sq.-ft. street-level dining room decorated Art Deco style. It is one of the most enjoyable dining rooms in town, with views of the creek and historic downtown.

The banquet room is downstairs and is a more private experience, ideal for larger parties, luncheons, special occasions, and rehearsal dinners. “The extension of our dining area gives us the opportunity to host large parties,” says Chris.

Customers also will enjoy sitting at the upstairs bar. The bar includes “well” drinks (typically $7) and top-shelf liquors, such as Kettle One vodka, High West bourbon, Camarena Gold tequila, or locally distilled Darjeeling gin, for $2 more. Drinks include a Dirty Martini, Moscow Mule and Old Fashioned.

John makes the Bloody Mary mix from scratch, which includes fresh tomato juice, lime, lemon, carrot, celery, cucumber, fennel seed, celery seed, horseradish and fresh ground jalapeños. Lefty’s also offers 12 beers on tap, including ones from ol’ Republic
Brewery and Sierra Nevada Brewing.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Lefty’s will offer top-shelf margaritas, authentic Oaxacan carnitas and other Mexican treats. This summer, the restaurant will be open “late night” with a special bar menu and they’ll be adding live music.
