Tahoe Concours d’Elegance moves to West Shore on August 8-9

MORE THAN 60 CLASSIC WOODEN BOATS, many dating back to the 1920s and ‘30s, are going on display this summer when the 42nd annual Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance opens at its new location on the West Shore.

After 20 years on the north shore, the show moves to Obexer’s Boat Company in Homewood, the birthplace of wooden boats on Lake Tahoe, for the August 8-9 show.

“The history of Obexer’s, founded in 1911 and the first wooden boat dealership on Lake Tahoe, is as classic as the boats themselves,” says Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation President David Olson.

J.P. Obexer’s Boat Company, which introduced Gar Woods to the lake, is located on the west shore, 6.5 miles south of Tahoe City, on Hwy. 89.

“We are thrilled to bring the show to the Homewood community, also rich in history and home to the Tahoe Maritime Museum,” Olson adds. “This partnership reinforces the setting that makes Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation’s Concours the premier wooden boat show in the country.”

In addition to the “woodies” on display, the two-day Concours offers vendor booths, a wine village, and a food-and-drink court with live music. Tickets for the show and accompanying Wooden Boat Week events are available online at LakeTahoeConcours.com.

MARQUE CLASS IS BARRELBACKS
The 2014 featured Marque Class is Barrelbacks. Although the term barrelback is a modern one, the stern design it represents is timeless. Originally termed “Torpedo decks” or excessive “tumblehome” all resulted in a boating icon.

The famous naval architects John Hacker and George Crouch are credited with the sloping design feature, drawing it into their exotic racing boats and runabouts in the early 1920s.

Chris-Craft was not the only builder of barrelbacks, and the Concours hopes to rec- ognize all of the true barrelbacks produced prior to World War II, including Hackercraft, Mercury, Century, Gar Wood and others.
