Popular Broadway musical Hamilton coming to San Francisco in March 2017

The blockbuster Broadway musical Hamilton is coming to the SHN Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco in March 2017 as the anchor of its 2016-2017 season. The San Francisco performance is part of a national tour.

The show features book, music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. A thoroughly inventive, wildly entertaining musical about the birth of our nation—with a score that blends hip-hop, pop, blues, jazz and Broadway—Hamilton opened on Broadway earlier this year to enthusiastic reception from critics and audiences of all ages.

“I am loath to tell people to mortgage their houses and lease their children to acquire tickets to a hit Broadway show,” wrote Ben Brantley in the New York Times. “But ‘Hamilton,’ directed by Thomas Kail and starring Mr. Miranda, might just about be worth it — at least to anyone who wants proof that the American musical is not only surviving but also evolving in ways that should allow it to thrive and transmogrify in years to come.

Hamilton’s creative team previously collaborated on the 2008 Tony Award-winning Best Musical In The Heights. The new musical is produced by Jeffrey Seller, Sander Jacobs, Jill Furman, and The Public Theater. The “Hamilton” original Broadway cast recording received a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album.

The national tour begins in San Francisco in March 2017 at the SHN Orpheum Theater; the Los Angeles production is set to run from Aug. 11 to Dec. 30, 2017, at the Hollywood Pantages Theater. A Chicago production is scheduled to begin sooner — on Sept. 27, 2016, at the PrivateBank Theater. For more information on the San Francisco tour, visit SHNSF.com.
