Sierra Stages presents “The Last Five Years” in spring and “Little Shop of Horrors” in summer

THIS SPRING AND SUMMER, Sierra Stages continues its 2016 season with two diverse musicals that have developed a popular following since debuting Off-Broadway. “The Last Five Years” plays at the Off Center Stage in Grass Valley April 28-May 8, and “Little Shop of Horrors” plays at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City July 14-August 6.

From first date to final goodbye, “The Last Five Years” chronicles the highs and lows of modern marriage. Through the course of 14 songs, rising novelist Jamie and struggling actress Cathy separately tell their own account of their five-year relationship and explore their emotionally complex romance through beautifully haunting music and original, ingenious lyrics.

Local actors Tinley Ireland and Jonathan Hansard make up the cast of two. Susan Mason directs, with musical direction by Ken Getz.

The music for “The Last Five Years” is both instantly accessible for the audience and extremely difficult for the performers, according to musical director Ken Getz. “It’s funny, sad, touching and sweet, all in the space of 90 minutes,” says Getz.

Laced with dark humor and irresistible music, “Little Shop of Horrors” is one of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time.

Seymour, a down-and-out floral assistant who longs to get the girl of his dreams and escape life on skid row, becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving that offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. Robert Rossman directs, with musical direction by Ken Getz.

“Little Shop of Horrors” features music that is a fun amalgam of Broadway and ’60s Rock and Roll, with clever twists and turns. The score, which is familiar to those who have seen the show or the film version, was written by the same team that created Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Aladdin.”

Performances of both “The Last Five Years” and “Little Shop of Horrors” are Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission and reserved seating tickets are available for each show.
