A Home Away From Home: Goldtown Hideaway in Nevada City

TWO YEARS AGO, SAN FRANCISCANS MOLLIE Poe and Declan Hickey and their daughters, Skylar and Sabine, discovered the magic of Nevada City and opened the Goldtown Hideaway in the historic downtown.

Just a year later, Mollie’s parents, Barbara and Ken, followed in their footsteps, opening The Madison House Bed & Breakfast, formerly known as The Parsonage, on Nevada City’s Broad Street.

Their family, along with others, are helping to upgrade the lodging scene in western Nevada County, which swells with visitors for the Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race, Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Fourth of July, Fall Colors and Victorian Christmas. The historic town also is ideal for a “snowless” escape in winter.

Mollie and Declan’s ‘in-town’ Goldtown Hideaway, located at 534 Spring Street, was built in 1851 and formerly known as the Kendall House, a popular and well regarded Bed and Breakfast run by Dr. Kendall and his wife Jan.

This spacious property, located on nearly a full wooded acre, houses a variety of accommodations: a spacious owner’s residence, a two-room suite overlooking its beautiful landscaped yard, a quaint and charming garden studio, and a large comfort- able space at the rear of the lot, affectionately known as ‘The Barn.”

Each accommodation has its own entrance and unique feel. The rooms have been updated with new luxurious upscale furnishings, bedding and towels, flat-screen TVs,DirectTV, and Wi-Fi. Comfort abounds in every element of the property, all of which has been redesigned by blending modern updates with an influx of locally sourced antiques and accessories.

“The Barn,” which sleeps four guests, includes a full kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and all new cookware; a wood-burning stove for chilly nights, and use of a large hot tub for stargazing surrounded by towering sequoia and redwood trees.

For romantics, the Garden Studio accessed by its own wooden walkway includes a serene sitting area, full-sized bed, and refurbished claw-foot tub.
