Fresh, local feasts

“COOKING IS AN ART. CAREFUL SHOPPING, fresh ingredients and an unhurried approach are nearly all you need,” summed up the late British celebrity cook Keith Floyd. “There is one more thing — love. Love for food and love for those you invite to your table. With a combination of these things, you can be an artist.”

In the foothills and Truckee-Tahoe, the possibilities abound for preparing a fresh, local feast for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah or New Year’s. We are blessed with local farmers and ranchers, farmers markets, a growing number of artisan food makers, and stores that feature local produce and meats. Here are some suggestions for finding the ingredients and preparing a fresh, local feast:

FARMERS MARKETS
“They’re only for summer,” you might think. Not so. The Foothill Farmers’ Market in Auburn is open year-round on Saturdays at the Old Town Courthouse parking lot, on Auburn-Folsom Rd. at Lincoln Way.
