Nevada County Fair for Homegrown

THE NEVADA COUNTY FAIR in Grass Valley, on August 7-11, is a homesteader’s paradise.

It features sustainable agriculture, home preservation of food and similar activities—at what’s hailed as “California’s most beautiful fairgrounds.”

You can connect with producers of local baked goods, preserved foods, honey, eggs, home-brewed beer, wine and wool fiber.

The food judging includes Cornish items, honoring the area’s Cornish heritage; gourmet jams and jellies; “elephant sized” veggies (this year’s fair theme is “Under the Big Top”); novel-shaped containers filled with honey; gluten-free baked foods and more.

“Ag-Sperience” is devoted to education in local education. It has daily demonstrations by Master Gardeners, beekeepers, Future Farmers of America, 4-H and others.

Fairgoers can see chicks hatch, sheep shearing and a live bee hive.

The Nevada County Fairgrounds also hosts the Draft Horse Classic, from Sept. 19-22. A “Bounty of the County” event on September 21 pairs local chefs and farms. A BBQ Cook-off on September 22 features ribs and chicken.
