The Sierra offers imaginative winter adventures:

DAYTIME, FULL MOON AND STAR GAZING SNOWSHOE HIKES
“Snowshoeing is a great way to access the natural areas around Lake Tahoe,” says Kevin Hickey, owner of Tahoe Adventure Company.

The tour company’s guided treks let you experience the beauty and solitude of winter. The adventures include a nature talk, lunch, a campfire, s’mores and hot drinks. The trips are on February 15, March 1 and March 15.

Full moon snowshoe treks, with a stop for snacks and hot drinks, are January 15, February 14 and March 16.

Snowshoe star-gazing tours include telescopic tours of the night sky and are January 18, February 22, March 22 and April 5.

A WOOD-FIRED SAUNA
Sorensen’s Resort in the Hope Valley, near Tahoe, has a Norwegian-style wood-fired sauna.
Snowshoeing, XC skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding and sledding are outside your cabin or within a short drive.

Snowshoes are complimentary. Full-moon snowshoe treks are February 8 and 14; a Sierra Crest snowshoe tour is January 26, February 23 and March 9 and Sunset snowshoe walks are March 1,8 and 13.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE SNOW FESTIVAL
Snowfest takes place February 28-March 9 and includes parades, races, parties, food and wine pairings, a North Tahoe Firefighters pancake breakfast, Bridgetender rib fest, River Ranch snow-sculpture contest, Gar Woods “polar bear” swim and more.

The Tahoe City Golf Course Dog Pull also is popular. Enjoy friendly racing for dogs of all ages and sizes. There are treats for all competitors and prizes for the winners.

Sno-Parks
California operates 18 Sno-Park areas, many of them around Tahoe.

They provide plowed parking lots and access to snow play areas. Some also feature cross-country ski and snowmobile trails.

Sno-Park permits are required. They are available at the Placer County Visitors Center-California Welcome Center at 1103 High St. in Auburn on the ride up to Tahoe. VisitPlacer.com

You can also buy the permits online at OHV.parks.CA.gov.
