Truckee’s new butcher shop: Mountain Valley Meats

The food scene in Truckee is on a roll — with restaurants such as Stella at the Center House Sports Hotel, whose chef Jacob Burton was a finalist in the Food & Wine magazine awards for “Best New Chef” this year. Then Restaurant Trokay won a four-star review in the Sacramento Bee this summer. The first all-Indian restaurant, Spice, opened this fall.

Now Truckee has a custom butcher shop — Mountain Valley Meats. The butcher shop and catering business is located in the Rock Shopping Center, next to Fifty Fifty Brewing Co. The address is 11209 Brockway Road.

It features beef, chicken, pork and seasonal sausages. It also offers local products made by locals whenever possible. “Just ate the chili cilantro sausage for lunch,” one customer wrote on Mountain Valley Meats’ Facebook page. “Outstanding!”

The products include beef (Chuck, Ground Chuck, New York, Ribeye, Skirt Steak, PSMO Tenderloin and Tri-Tip); chicken (bone-in breasts, boneless and skinless breasts, legs and whole); pork (tenderloin, chop, roast or shoulder); and sausages (Bratwurst, Jalapeno Cheese Slider, Spicy Chili Cilantro, Spicy Buffalo Chicken & Blue Cheese and Sweet & Spicy Soy Ginger).

There also carry speciality foods from the San Francisco Pickle Co., which sells its gourmet pickles at the Ferry Building marketplace and specialty stores in Marin, Napa and Santa Clara counties. Flavors include “Wild Fire, Cajun and Jamaican Jerk.”

Mountain Valley Meats is owned by a pair of Tahoe-Truckee locals, with experience in the fine food business.

Brandon Uresky has been in the food industry for 20 years. He is an accredited chef at The Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland and was the Executive Chef at Northstar over the 2012/2013 season.

Jess Curtis has worked in the food business for 15 years. She is an accredited chef from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and worked closely with a butcher for 8 months.
