Exclusive: Grass Valley Courtyard Suites to get Tesla charger

Grass Valley Courtyard Suites soon will become the first business in western Nevada County to get a Tesla charging station, increasingly a draw for affluent tourists, our magazine has learned.

More electric vehicles are on the road, with Northern California ranked as the top EV region, as we reported in our fall issue. The stations are booming along the I-80 corridor between the Bay Area and Truckee-Tahoe.

In addition, Grass Valley Courtyard Suites is going to have a second EV station installed for all electric vehicles, not just Tesla models, the hotel’s owner Kathy Racz told us. The EV charging stations are expected by summer.

Tesla has leading “mindshare” among electric vehicles, and the nearest supercharging station is either in Rocklin or Truckee. “Superchargers are free connectors that charge (Tesla cars) in minutes instead of hours. Stations are strategically placed to minimize stops during long distance travel and are conveniently located near restaurants, shopping centers, and WiFi hot spots.”

Tesla is building a $5 billion battery factory near Reno. The “gigafactory” is expected to create an economic boost for Reno but also spill into the Truckee-Tahoe area.

For its part Tesla now has 425 supercharger stations with 2,338 superchargers. Superchargers deliver up to 120 kW of direct current (DC) power directly to the battery. Tesla typically covers the costs.

Our magazine has been a big proponent of the EV charging stations because of our focus on promoting destination tourism in our region.
