Treat yourself and your father–or husband, son, wife, daughter or friend — to a great day on Father’s Day with pianist Joel Fan. Eclectic programming has become a Joel Fan trademark. His recital program will mix the familiar with the unfamiliar with works by Franz Liszt, Alexander Scriabin, Ernesto Nazareth, and the virtuosic Samuel Barber’s Piano Sonata, which was hailed upon its premiere in 1947 as a masterpiece of American musical literature and the newest landmark work for the piano.

Fan is noted for his work as the pianist for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. As a child prodigy, he made his debut playing with the New York Philharmonic at age 11. He has been guest artist with orchestras throughout the United States as well as in Europe and the Far East. “A versatile and sensitive pianist — an impressive talent,” as noted by The Washington Post.

“If you missed Joel Fan the last time he performed for InConcert Sierra in May 2009, you’re in for an incredible experience,” says executive director Julie Hardin. “Joel brought the house to its feet several times during his last visit, we’re excited to have him back. This will be our fourth super-star pianist this season.”

Concert-gore Harlow Rothert remarked after Fan’s 2009 concert, ” What a performance by Joel Fan. I could have listened for a couple more hours. He is remarkable to say the least.”

As with most solo piano concerts, a large screen will project the pianists hands over the stage for the audience to see the amazing finger-work of the artist. Between the exquisite acoustic quality of the venue and the ability for all to view the keyboard, the experience of hearing a high-caliber artists such as Fan is greatly heightened.

This concert marks the last program of InConcert Sierra’s 2010-11 season. It is sponsored by Nicole Janison, Robyn and Kevin Runbeck, Elisabeth and Don Noel, and Sherman Clay in Roseville (Joel Fan is a Steinway Artist).

Bio:

An artist with a “probing intellect and a vivid imagination” (New York Times), Joel is a uniquely brilliant pianist conjoining great works of the past and newly discovered music of cultures from around the world. As the Boston Globe commented, Joel is a “Champion of new music, explorer of world music.” His performances and recordings have garnered praise worldwide.

Joel is a graduate of Harvard College and received a Masters degree from Peabody Conservatory as a student of Leon Fleisher.
