On Sunday afternoon, November 17, InConcert Sierra presents a young pianist who is having one of the most incredible years of his life.

At age 24, Sean Chen has become a tour de force in the world of classical music. He won the 2013 American Pianists Association’s DeHaan Classical Fellowship, one of the most lucrative and significant prizes available to an American pianist, which includes a booking with InConcert Sierra.

His third place Crystal Award win at the Van Cliburn competition marked the first time an American had reached the finals since 1997. He also received third prize at the 2013 Morocco Philharmony International Piano Competition.

Last April, InConcert Sierra Artistic Director, Ken Hardin, was invited as a guest of the American Pianist Association to attend the APA Competition Finals: “Sean’s performances displayed mind-blowing virtuosity, masterful interpretation, and had the audience completely spellbound. His youthful zeal and dynamite smile is absolutely charming. I’m very excited to have him perform for us at InConcert Sierra.”

The November 17 program will include Valse in A-flat Major by Alexander Scriabin; Impromptus by Frédéric Chopin; La Valse by Maurice Ravel, arranged by Sean Chen; and Sonata No. 8 by Sergei Prokofiev.

Born in 1988 in Florida, Chen grew up in the Los Angeles area, wining prizes and scholarships for his musicianship and his extraordinary intelligence. Chen earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Juilliard, and is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma at the Yale School of Music as a George W. Miles Fellowship recipient.

There is a pre-concert forum at 1:15pm with Dr. Aileen James (former Artistic Director of the American Pianist Association.) The winners of InConcert Sierra’s Autumn Youth Scholarship will be announced after intermission.

This concert is sponsored by B&C True Value Home and Garden Center; John Wilson and Susie Monary-Wilson- in honor of Glenys Wilson; Audrey Ohlson Smith and Len Lewis-in honor of Elmer Nordlof; and Jeff Leiter and Brent Koegel.
