The Center for the Arts is pleased to present Grammy Award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo on Monday, February 27 at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. Ladysmith, best known for their breakthrough performance on Paul Simon’s Grammy winning 1986 Album of the year Graceland, has continued to bring their rich harmonies to audiences worldwide. In 1987, Simon produced Black Mambazo’s first U.S. release, Shaka Zulu, which won the Grammy Award, in 1988 for Best Traditional Folk Album. Since then, and in total, the group has received fifteen Grammy Award Nominations and three Grammy Award wins, including one in 2009.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo — led by founder and front man Joseph Shabalala — celebrates 45 years of joyous and uplifting music that marries the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. In those years, the a cappella vocal group has created a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. Their musical efforts over the past four decades have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry, but also solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with.

This is the first concert in the Center for the Arts’ 2012 Off Site Series. There will be many more to come and announced shortly. In 2011, The Center presented 7 diverse headlining artists at Veterans Memorial Auditorium; Ani Difranco, Wynton Marsalis, Taj Mahal, Crosby Nash, Judy Collins, Robert Cray, Clint Black and Ira Glass and Aaron Neville at the historic North Star House.

The Center is also continuing their collaborations with non-profits — creating opportunit ies for organizations to benefit from the association with headline entertainment . For the Ladysmith Black Mambazo concert, The Center will be partnering with Hospitality House / Utah’s Place — the homeless shelter founded by Utah Phillips. Hospitality House is a non-profit program in Nevada County servicing the homeless, working in collaboration with area local churches and other service organizations.

Tickets for Ladysmith Black Mambazo are on sale to Center for the Arts members now through January 3. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, January 4. To become a member or to purchase tickets call the Center Box Office at 530-274-8384 or online at www.thecenterforthearts.org .
