Latkes for Hanukkah at Tess’ Kitchen Store in Grass Valley

Our family enjoys cultural adventures, so we celebrated Hanukkah while cooking and eating Latkes at Tess’ Kitchen Store in downtown Grass Valley.

Saturday was the first night of Hanukkah. Downtown Grass Valley was all aglow, decked out with holiday lights, colorful window displays and the sound of carolers. The town was bustling.

The evening highlight was cooking and eating Latkes, as well as singing and lighting the Menorah at Tess’ new restaurant quality kitchen on Mill Street. Owner Steve Rosenthal and in-house chef Roberta DesBullions led the festivities.

Latkes are a popular treat during the eight-day Festival of Lights. The oil for cooking the latkes symbolizes the oil from the Hanukkah story that kept ancient Israel lit with a long-lasting flame that is celebrated as a miracle.

Afterward, we strolled down the street, shopping at several merchants and visiting the Grass Valley Wine Co. and Smith Vineyard tasting rooms.
