Nevada City singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom marries comedian Andy Samberg in Big Sur

Well, it’s official now: singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom, who grew up in Nevada City, married comedian Andy Samberg on Saturday in Big Sur, at the Post Ranch Inn.

Samberg, 35, is the former Saturday Night Live Star and star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Newsom, 31, is an accomplished pianist and harpist, as well as a singer and songwriter.

The happy couple was joined by their family and friends. (We got the “scoop,” because our friend and neighbor was invited. She has known Joanna since childhood. Our role in the wedding: Babysitting our friend’s dog, “Miss Olive.” I think our 11-year-old son wants to adopt this dog).

“Wonderful gathering with of course, the entire SNL crew. Adam Sandler as well. Who’s who,” our friend reported. And a Saturday night wedding for the SNL crew, no less.

“The event was held at the Post Ranch. It was pretty magical. Lots of people but very intimate. It was one of those rarely seen and felt healthy weddings despite who they are in the media world. True love indeed.”

Menu

The menu was served family style and dishes included Roasted Garden Vegetables with Heirloom Tomatoes, Beluga Lentils and Roasted Garlic, Whole Roasted Heirloom Cauliflower, Wild King Salmon, Slow-Roasted Pheasant Breasts and Wild Boar Marinated with Local Bay Laurel, our friend said. Monterey Bay Abalone was one of the appetizers.

The wedding cake was “Meyer Lemon Cake with Blackberry-Poppy Flower Jam, Lemon Curd and Lavender-Blackberry Buttercream” and “Chocolate Cake with Salted Caramel Orange Ganache and Lavender-Blackberry Buttercream.”

On Friday, some pre-wedding “hootenanny” was held at the Henry Miller Memorial Library, a landmark named in Henry Miller’s honor. Henry Miller (1891-1980) lived in Big Sur between 1944 and 1962.

Newsom’s mother, Christine, is an internist and her father, William Newsom, also is a doctor (who retired last year). She is the second cousin, twice removed, of Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom studied at Mills College in Oakland. She began playing the piano at age five and later the harp.

Newsom and Samberg have been a couple for about five years. The engagement was announced in February and reports leaked out of a weekend wedding, but the location was not reported correctly (Berkeley instead of Big Sur). “They have great chemistry,” one pal told USWeekly.

Here’s a tidbit: In 2009 Newsom played with fellow Nevada City singer-songwriter Mariee Sioux at the Fernwood Resort in Big Sur, California. They played over two hours of new material in a “secret” concert.

We had a wonderful time babysitting “Miss Olive,” a Corgi. “Will she take me back?” our friend joked.

The Hollywood media was outfoxed on this one. We were amused at some of the preliminary reports that had the wedding set for Berkeley, where Samberg grew up, when it was in Big Sur. Other reports were geographically challenged: “No word if the reception was on a boat,” US Weekly reported, obviously clueless that there is no boat dock at the Post Ranch Inn.

“Miss Olive,” meanwhile, was well taken care of:
