Squaw hosting a “welcome home” celebration for Tahoe Olympians on March 21

Editor’s note: Here’s the letter from Squaw Valley Ski Holdings chief executive Andy Wirth announcing a “welcome home” celebration for Tahoe Olympians.

Dear Lake Tahoe Community:

I trust that you were as inspired and moved as I was while watching the 2014 Winter Olympics. It was with great pride that we all watched athletes from our country and our community compete in the Games so successfully and with such passion. With no exception, they all handled themselves with such poise and grace – truly remarkable individuals, on and off the snow.

An associate at the U.S. Ski Team once remarked that Squaw Valley and our race program have become, from an athlete perspective, “The Official Supplier to the US Ski Team”. Most certainly we’re quite proud of the athletes that were in many ways raised by this mountain and KT-22, including 2014 Olympic Bronze Medalist Julia Mancuso, Marco Sullivan, Travis Ganong and Nate Holland.

We are equally as proud and impressed by the athletes from the region who hail from other mountains for their truly incredible performances in Sochi. In fact, I believe that, at one point in the games, if Lake Tahoe was a sovereign nation, we might have been in the top five relative to the medal count!

I’ve often remarked that it takes a community to raise an Olympian, so now I would like to invite you to join us as our entire community welcomes home our athletes from competing so very well in Russia.

On the evening of Friday, March 21, Squaw Valley is hosting a community-wide Welcome Home Celebration for all of the great athletes from this area.

From South Lake Tahoe to Reno, and from Sacramento to Squaw Valley, we’re assembling to welcome home as many of the athletes from our area as possible, along with legends Bode Miller and Ted Ligety and new stars like Mikaela Shiffrin who will be in town for the 2014 U.S. Alpine Nationals.

The evening will feature an athlete parade, a very special video presentation, fireworks, an athlete meet and autograph session, live music and much more. This will undoubtedly be an evening for all of us to remember!

Please mark your calendars for Friday, March 21 and join the entire community and region as we welcome home all of our athletes.

Warm regards,

Andy Wirth
