BriarPatch Market: Foothills most successful Co-op

NATURAL FOOD COOPERATIVES ARE pioneers of the organic food movement. For more than 30 years, co-ops have been a favorite for people who want to buy fresh, healthy food and learn about it.

The 114 food co-ops of the National Cooperative Grocers Association generate annual sales of $1 billion, and revenue is expected to double during the next decade.

Nowhere is the thriving business more visible than at BriarPatch Co-op Natural Foods Community Market in Grass Valley.

With more than 4,000 owner-members, “The Patch” has grown to become the most successful co-op in the foothills.

“The heart of our evolution from a small buying club 34 years ago to our new full service grocery store is providing a complete offering of great food and enhancing our customer’s sense of community,” says Chris Maher, BriarPatch general manager.

Three years ago, BriarPatch opened a 13,000-sq.-ft. store with a certified “green” design. The store has an extensive prepared foods deli, dining area and outdoor patio.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are certified organically grown. Produce from local farms is featured whenever it’s available.

The deli offers fresh sandwiches, salads, smoothies and juices, along with vegan and gluten-free dishes. “Our food bar is the most popular part of the deli, with a revolving board menu of hot foods and includes the only organic salad bar in town,” says Chris.

BriarPatch features organic and natural meats and poultry. The fresh seafood is sustainably caught and farmed.

The store carries Nevada County Free Range Beef, one of our favorites. Rancher and owner Jim Gates, a modern-day cowboy, often visits the store to meet customers and offer samples.

The store also has been a model for the “Go Local” movement. In August, it will sponsor “Eat Local Nevada County Month,” focusing on the wealth of fresh, local food in the area.

“BriarPatch is a place where people can learn about food,” says Chris. “We highlight the importance of sound agricultural practices on our environment.”
