Hotels & Wineries Double as Art Galleries

Grass Valley Courtyard Suites is becoming an “art hotel.” Embracing the recent state Cultural District designation, the owners plan to display local artwork throughout the hotel, including at its 1,300-square- foot event center.

Each month, the hotel will feature a different artist or collaboration of artists. It also will host artist receptions. “We’re thrilled to introduce our guests to our local artists,” says project coordinator Danielle Scallin. “It’s going to be an immersive experience.”

Other businesses in our region also showcase local artwork. Nevada City Winery, for example, features an “artist of the month,” including an opening reception. The artwork hangs on the walls at the winery. Avanguardia and Szabo wineries also display local artwork in their tasting rooms.

The Center Begins its $4.3 Million Renovation
The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley has begun its $4.3 million renovation, and its much-anticipated reopening is slated for summer 2019.

The Center will offer a state-of-the-art home for productions, creative projects, and for the entire community, a cultural destination in the heart of Grass Valley.

The new venue will include a 492-seat theater with retractable seating; an expanded gallery space; a lobby with expanded bar and concessions; an ADA-accessible box office and front entrance; and an unrivaled state-of- the-art sound system.

Quest and LeGacy Win Elly Awards
In September Quest Theaterworks of Grass Valley won five Elly Awards, including best drama production for “Snake in the Grass,” from the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Association. LeGacy Presents won an Elly Award for “Broadway Bound.” Named for Eleanor McClatchy, a devoted patron of the arts and former publisher of the Sacramento Bee, the Elly Awards celebrates excellence in Sacramento’s regional theater.

Quest presents the Nugget Fringe Festival on January 17-27 in Grass Valley. The festival has grown to 40 shows for 120 cutting-edge performances on six stages in downtown Grass Valley. NuggetFringe.com
