Local food: A hallmark of Nevada County

AN HOUR FROM SACRAMENTO ON “the road less traveled,” Nevada County is blessed with an abundance of ranchland and farmland. There are more than 80 farmers and ranchers selling their products, most of them belonging to Nevada County Grown.

From grass-fed beef to organic vegetables, the county supports a well-rounded local harvest. The produce is sold at farmers markets, as “veggies in a box,” (CSA subscription boxes), and at markets, such as BriarPatch Community Market Co-op. At BriarPatch alone, more than 180 varieties of fruits, vegetables and flowers are grown locally.

This year, Nevada County farmers are gearing up for an abundance of crops, just like their Placer County neighbors.

There are some new twists: Riverhill Farm is offering a “Friends of the Farm” card, allowing users to buy produce at the Nevada City Farmers Market or its farmstand.

A Nevada City women, Shanan Manuel, brings her years of culinary experience and love of using locally grown organic foods to a new business venture, Sierra Farm To Table Cuisine (SierraFarmtoTable.com).

This year the Nevada City Farmers Market on Spring Street and the Nevada County Growers Market, at the Julia Morgan-designed North Star House in Grass Valley, will be open on Saturdays, from June-November.
The Mill Street Certified Farmers Market in Grass Valley is open from June-August.

Ol’ Republic Brewery
LOCAL CRAFT BEER IS BOOMING, and Nevada City now has its own brewery. Ol’ Republic just opened in the Seven Hills business district.

It features limited-edition seasonal and specialty beers, created by brewing veterans Jim Harte and Simon Olney. Jim has won a gold medal for his beer at the state fair.

The brewery has a sleek interior space and a beer garden out in front. Stainless-steel beer “growlers” will soon be available to go.
