Placer County Welcome Guide rolls out next month

The success of our FoodWineArt magazine also earned us the privilege to publish the official Placer County Welcome Guide, which distributes throughout all of California. We’re going to roll out the 2011 issue before the Amgen Tour of California bike race on May 15.

It’s 70,000 copies and also will include the PlacerGROWN farm guide, in a four-color magazine for the first time, with a much broader and deeper distribution. The farmers and restaurants that feature fresh, local veggies, fruit and meats are excited about the wider exposure.

We’ll also promote Placer County Real Food, which features recipes from the Foothill Farmers market year-round. I enjoy working with Joanne Neft, the cookbook’s co-author and Foothills Market founder. We’re also running a colorful map of seasonal produce from Wendy Van Wagner’s “In the Kitchen” cooking school, which happens to be in Nevada County.

Besides a farm-to-table guide, wine tasting, arts & culture and adventure, we’re going to promote geo-tourism, thanks to the help of the Sierra Business Council. The Sierra Nevada Geotourism map also is promoted on the righthand side of this blog. All told, the guide will focus on what’s unique and local in Placer County — going beyond the routine tourism guide.

Among the other tasks, I enjoy sifting through hundreds of photos to find the best ones for the 70-page annual “book.” I found the rafting shot, above, from an Oregon photographer named Justin Bailie. Justin makes regular trips to area because he has family members in Cool. The cover shot, below, is shot at Blue Canyon. The photographer is Leon Turnbull, who has some spectacular waterfall shots of Northern California. We have many talented photographers in the foothills, such as Keith Sutter and Ben Furtado over in Auburn. There’s much to photograph, from the historic towns, to the North Fork of the American River, to Lake Tahoe.
