Sierra Adventures: Get up and go

Spring in the Sierra is a perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors before the summer crowds. Some of our favorite places include:

DONNER MEMORIAL STATE PARK
A new Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center opens in June. The new visitor center will replace the existing Emigrant Trail Museum and will feature a state of the art facility with engaging programs and exhibits.

HOPE VALLEY
Along historic Hwy. 88, the route of pioneers such as John Fremont and Kit Carson, Hope Valley near Lake Tahoe is known for its scenic beauty and recre- ation. The valley is popular with fisherman, hikers, cyclists and campers in spring and summer. Sorensen’s Resort in Hope Valley features a star watch on May 16, plein-air painting class on June 1-5, and Emigrant Trail trek on June 21-22. AlpineCounty.com

TAHOE RIM TRAIL
This 165-mile, 24-inch, single-track trail is open to hiking, equestrians and mountain biking (in most areas). The trail encompasses the ridge tops of the Lake Tahoe Basin, crossing six counties and two states. The Tahoe Rim Trail overlaps with about 50 miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. TAHOE MARITIME MUSEUM
The museum will open its 2015 exhibit, “Racing Tahoe: Post World War II Powerboats,” on June 5. In October, the museum will move from Homewood to the corner of Hwy. 89 and Granlibakken Rd. near Tahoe City. A new museum campus, including historical and art exhibition galleries, classroom and community meeting spaces, a boat restoration building and a small library, is planned for the new site.

TAHOE WATER TRAIL
Lake Tahoe offers more than 72 miles of shoreline, with sandy beaches and rocky inlets – ideal conditions for kayaks, paddleboards, and other non-motorized watercraft. Most day trip paddlers spend just under two hours on the water and paddle between 1.6 and 4.8 miles. The California Tahoe Conservancy Board recently awarded Sierra Business Council $50,000 to expand and enhance the Lake Tahoe Water Trail.

TAHOE’S WEST SHORE
The West Shore of Lake Tahoe is the area between Tahoe City and Emerald Bay and is known for its beauty and outdoor activities. “Opening Day at the Lake” is Memorial Day weekend and is comprised of celebrations and festivities along the West Shore, including a seaplane splash-in and BBQ at Obexer’s General Store.
