Art at Burning Man

Burning Man is an annual event and a thriving year-round culture. The event takes place the week leading up to and including Labor Day, in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The Burning Man organization (Black Rock City LLC) creates the infrastructure of Black Rock City, wherein attendees (or “participants”) dedicate themselves to the spirit of community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.

The Exploratorium, in collaboration with the Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF), will bring Homouroboros, large-scale interactive zoetrope by San Francisco artist Peter Hudson, to the public plaza at Pier 15 for a limited engagement.

“The playa is a tabula rasa, a blank canvas upon which many a fantastic vision has been realized,” according to Burning Man’s website. “Submarines, gigantic ducks, swimmers, fire-breathing thistles, serpents and balsa wood temples have emerged from the playa.”

At Center Camp Coffee Shop, coffee is brewed and delivered by volunteer baristas all night long. Baristas must have prior experience and be able to make espressos, lattes and cappuccinos “in all their many variations on a standard machine.”
