Tasting Notes: Nevada City Winery, Bent Metal and Popie Wines

What’s new at Sierra Foothills wineries:

NEVADA CITY WINERY & GOLDEN ERA
Local collaboration is a theme in the New Year, among chefs, restaurateurs, farmers, winemakers and brewmasters. In one example, Nevada City Winery in Nevada County CA is providing a custom-blended wine to the Golden Era cocktail lounge, also in the city’s historic downtown.

Nevada City Winery’s award-winning winemaker Mark Foster has created a blend of Mediterranean wines, Syrah, Sangiovese and Mouvedre. It is being dispensed through a wine tap, similar to a beer tap. Wine taps help keep the wine fresh and are a growing trend. NevadaCityWinery.com

BENT METAL ON VALENTINE’S DAY
Not quite sure you’re ready to take the leap just yet? Get married at Bent Metal Winery on Valentine’s Day (Sunday, February 14) for 24 hours. Bring some friends, write some vows and Father Hart will officiate your ceremony. Then grab some wine and picnic items and hold a reception in the winery’s courtyard.

You can also get married for real. Father Hart is ordained and can perform a legal marriage. Just bring your marriage license, your friends and family. Real marriages are by appointment only for Sunday. This spring Bent Metal plans to release a 2014 Sangiovese and a 2012 Mourvedre. BentMetalWinery.com

POPIE WINES
Popie is offering Friday Night Music at its new tasting room at the historic Blue Goose Fruit Shed in Loomis. It includes wines by the glass Smith Vineyard owner-winemaker Gary Smith from 5-8 p.m. and music from 6-8 p.m. The tasting room is open Friday-Sunday. It also is available for private parties or dinners.

A new Popie Wine Club is being launched where members receive four quarterly pick- ups of three bottles each in February, May, August and November. Members are able to choose the bottles at a 25 percent discount. Wine Club members also receive a 20 percent discount on other Popie wines.

In the New Year, the Placer County CA winemaker is going to release its Gamay (a silver-medal winner in France); Roman Red (a red wine blend); and JPM (a blend of Barbera, Zinfandel and Syrah, and a touch of Charbono). PopieWines.com
