Amgen tour of California spotlights Sacramento

The 2016 Amgen Tour of California will celebrate its finale in Sacramento, California’s state capital, on Sunday, May 22.

Sacramento is centrally located in Northern California, nestled in a fertile valley between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. Named “The City of Trees” and “America’s Farm to Fork Capital” Sacramento is a beautiful and unique city just a short distance from the California Wine Country, Gold Country, California Redwoods, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Reno, and Yosemite. Sacramento is one of California’s most accessible major cities with Sacramento International Airport (SMF) 15 minutes from downtown and offering 170 direct or convenient connecting flights.

The city’s history began in 1839 when Johann Agustus Sutter settled at the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers. The discovery of gold near Sacramento in 1848 started California’s famous Gold Rush, bringing thousands of fortune seekers to the area almost overnight. The city has been on the move ever since and is now one of the fastest growing regions in the United States.

Sacramento has an abundance of year-round attractions, museums, and entertainment venues tucked into its culturally diverse cityscape. Enjoy our local playhouses and the Broadway stage, museums and galleries, poetry readings and film festivals, ballet and opera. Recreation tops the list for outdoor activities with hundreds of miles of waterways, 2,000 acres of city parks, more than 50 golf courses, and two nearby lakes.
