Auburn Symphony presents renowned cellist Peled at Mondavi Center

Arguably the four most iconic notes in music history – the opening refrain of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony – will take center stage when the Auburn Symphony visits the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m., for its annual visit to this hallowed hall.

For its 30th Pearl Anniversary season, the Auburn Symphony moved up its Mondavi concert to January and will be joined by one of the finest cellist in the world, Amit Peled, who will be performing Shostakovich’s intensely powerful cello concerto.

The program will open with Copeland’s rip roaring “For Dance Episodes” from Rodeo and Beethoven’s celebrated 5th closes the show with the opening motive that Beethoven himself characterized as “Thus, Fate knocks at the door.” This remarkable piece has a rich 200-plus-year history with dramatic, and often political, associations with listeners. In World War II, for example, it was linked with the resistance to facism.

Peled wowed audiences around the world, including a solo performance at the State Theatre in Auburn over a year ago. He was honored prior to his recent worldwide tour to be entrusted with the 300-year-old Goffriller cello, owned and played by one of his great inspirations, the late master, Pablo Casals.

Tickets for the Mondavi concert are $40. Students are $20. There is also a chartered bus available that will transport patrons from Auburn to Davis and back for $25. They can be purchased online or by calling the Symphony office at 530-823-6683.

“When the Symphony plays in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center, the sound is always amazing,” said Executive Director Rob Haswell. “And Music Director Peter Jaffe has really put together a program that is befitting our 30th Anniversary season.”

The 2017-2018 Season is sponsored by Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows.
