Exclusive: InConcert Sierra to present Harvard Glee Club — and Steinway’s only double-keyboard piano

InConcert Sierra will host a performance of the Harvard Glee Club, America’s oldest collegiate choir, in Grass Valley in January, our magazine has learned.

It is a coup for the Sierra Foothills. The visit to Grass Valley is part of a three-week tour to much larger cities: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. The San Francisco concert is at the historic Grace Cathedral.

Landing the 60-voice, all-male choir — which has toured around the world — also shows our region’s growing visibility in the arts and culture scene.

InConcert Sierra Artistic Director Ken Hardin has a knack for landing world-class talent. In January, InConcert Sierra also will feature Emanuel Ax, one of the best classical pianists of the 21st century, and Jason Vieaux, rated among the elite of today’s classical guitarists. In the past, InConcert Sierra has hosted the Vienna Boys Choir.

America’s oldest college chorus, the Harvard Glee Club was founded in March 1858.

“Symphony collaborations over the years have included performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under all of its Conductors since 1917, as well as with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the Italian Radio Orchestra,” according to the Glee Club.

“Although there was a long break between the first and second HGC Summer Tours (1921 to 1956), they have become more frequent: Europe in 1956, 1973, 1987, 2002; Asia in 1961, 1982, 1993; Australia 1998; USA 1978. There have in addition been summer tours with RCS: cross-country in 1947 and 1954; USA/Canada in 1964; around the world in 1967.”

In addition, we’ve learned in November 2014, InConcert Sierra will present Christopher “Kit” Taylor playing a one-of-a-kind Steinway double-keyboard piano.

A gifted pianist of international acclaim, Taylor is the unofficial keeper of this rare musical instrument. He has played at the Kennedy Center, among other places.
