On Sunday afternoon January 7, InConcert Sierra rings in the New Year with pianist Emanuel Ax, one of the best known classical musicians of our time and winner of multiple Grammy awards for both solo and chamber performances. Ax will perform in the intimate 475-seat Grass Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Emanuel Ax’ program will focus on the works by Johannes Brahms including Piano Sonata No. 2 in F-sharp minor, Op.2; Klavierstücke, Op. 118 and Op. 119, Intermezzo Op. 117 No. 2, Romance Op. 118 No. 5, and Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Händel, Op. 24.
To enhance the audience’s experience, InConcert will project Ax’ hands on a screen above the piano as he performs. “We want our audience to have musical encounters that are beyond description with superb acoustics, not a bad seat in the house, and piano concerts with the pianist’s hands projected above the stage. For me, to see Emanuel Ax in this setting is a dream come true,” says Artistic Director Ken Hardin.
A consummate and thoughtful musician, the Los Angeles Times said, “His greatness, his overwhelming authority as musician, technician, and probing intellect emerges quickly as he plays. Within minutes, we are totally captured by his intensity and pianistic achievement.”
Ax has appeared with most major European and American orchestras, recently making return visits to the orchestras of Cleveland, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Toronto. And now, he will enchant us in the quaint and historic Sierra Foothills town of Grass Valley.
The recipient of many awards and accolades, Ax has been an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist since 1987 and has won seven Grammy Awards. He studied at The Juilliard School and Columbia University, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and holds honorary doctorates of music from Yale and Columbia Universities. He currently resides in New York City with his wife, pianist Yoko Nozaki, and their two children.
This performance is underwritten by Dr. Dennis McShane and the Honorable Richard Gordon; Julia Amaral and Mark Strate; and Dr. John and Lori Hagele. Grass Valley Courtyard Suites is the hospitality sponsor.
