Let it snow: A weekend winter wonderland ahead

A winter storm moved through Northern California, finally bringing snow to the Sierra. Another system is expected to bring more snow over the mountain.

It is well timed for skiing, XC skiing, riding, snow-carving contests and Super Bowl parties. The HGTV Dream Home in Truckee also is open to tours.

The new snow is going to get more ski lifts running over the weekend. The mountain resorts are expected to receive a foot or more of snow, with 6 inches at Lake Tahoe level, according to weather forecasters. “Forecast is looking good for great skiing and riding in the next few days,” SugarBowl said.

“Guess the total number of inches of snow this incoming storm system will drop on Homewood’s upper mountain by the time it’s done,” Homewood writes on its Facebook page.

“We’ll give the winner a brand new Descente jacket (choice of men’s or women’s) and a Homewood lift ticket to keep you warm and stoked on the pow days to come.”

Boreal said: “Handmade artisan snowboard parks open for business.” Lift tickets are as low as $15 on Fridays.

SUPER BOWL PARTIES

Many of the ski areas are planning Super Bowl parties. Homewood, Sugar Bowl, Northstar and other ski resorts will be playing the game on all TVs with drink specials. Alpine Meadow’s main lodge offers plenty of 54-inch flat-screens with food and drink specials.

“Enjoy a glorious view of the slopes and Super Bowl Sunday at the same time at Squaw Valley’s KT Base Bar,” according to Squaw. “You can’t go wrong with their gigantic 16”x21”, 49-panel ‘Diamond Vision’ television, eclectic food selection (like their ‘Tower 16’ onion rings) and a pint of your favorite drink. Festivities are planned throughout the day including giveaways and promotions.”

Carve Tahoe North returns to Northstar this weekend. It includes the world’s top snow sculptors from Finland, Germany, Canada, the Midwest and Tahoe to create works of art from 20-ton blocks of snow.

The sculptures will be on display all weekend.
