Wild & Scenic Film Festival art exhibition this weekend

Nevada County Arts is delighted to be a sponsor of SYRCL’s 11th Wild & Scenic Film Festival, “A Climate of Change”, which takes place January 10-13. The festival includes an incredible selection of films, workshops, music, art and other related activities and this is the second year that NCArts is coordinating the art exhibits.

A “call to artists,” was sent to more than 500 artists in October, and the jury selected 40 artists to participate, including projects from the Nevada City School of the Arts and the Neighborhood Center for Arts. The 2013 Jury Committee includes NCArts board members Roseanne Burke and Nancy Nelson; SYRCL board member Barbara Getz; film festival creative director Shana Maziarz; and film festival downtown coordinator Beverly LaFae.

Related exhibits during the Wild & Scenic Film Festival include the Living Wild Project at Mowen Solinsky; the Ridge Tapestry Project in the Granucci Room at The Center for the Arts; and photography by girls from The Friendship Club in the lobby of The Center for the Arts. In all, more than 80 artists are participating with art displayed in windows, shops, restaurants, wine tasting rooms and galleries throughout downtown Nevada City, and in Grass Valley at The Center for the Arts and the Grass Valley Wine Company.

“The art acts as another means to draw attention to climate change, change makers, our environment, and to inspire activism,” said Shana Maziarz, Creative Director of the festival.

Awards will be given to four artists selected by a jury which includes Jane Oleson (San Francisco gallery owner), Freda Scott (artist’s representative) and Elizabeth Soderstrom (conservationist). The awards are: Best in Show, Best in Theme, Best Emerging Artist and a Jurors Award. The winners will be announced on Saturday at the Alpha Building during the Art & Wine Stroll. Ben Franklin Crafts & Frames, The Center for the Arts, The Louvre Gallery, Nevada City Picture Framing and Szabo Vineyards have generously donated the award prizes.
