Best fresh, local turkeys from the Sierra Foothills and Central Valley

Our region is lucky because of the abundance of fresh, local turkeys that are available for the holidays. Some of them are sold by national food retailers such as Williams-Sonoma, but the turkey farms are in our own backyard. Here are some of our favorites. You can find many of them at markets throughout the region including Nugget Markets, Raley’s, Save Mart, Whole Foods, Corti Bros., Taylor’s Market, BriarPatch Coop and New Earth Market:

Branigan’s Turkey Farm was established in 1942 in Woodland, California. Their family owned operation raises 18,000 to 20,000 turkeys each year. The reason that Branigan’s Turkeys are different from regular store bought turkeys is that they are raised longer.

Though not in the Foothills or Central Valley, all Willie Bird smoked products are prepared at their family processing plant in Sonoma County. The family has been raising poultry in Sonoma County for over 75 years. They’ve become famous in our bountiful region for their superior quality and taste.
