Editor’s note: Now in her second year as executive director of Music in the Mountains, Cristine Kelly has done a wonderful job of reviving the group, along with the board, staff and Orchestra. Here’s a sneak peek at MIM’s SummerFest 2013. We like the outdoor concert — the Music of Queen Symphonic Spectacular.

June 11 & 14
The Young Composers Concert

These concerts are the culmination of a year of study in our composing program. Premiering 25 new works by our students.

June 21
Classical I: Rodrigo, Ravel, & Bizet

Our opening classical concert: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, and Bizet’s Symphony #1. Featuring internationally acclaimed guitar virtuoso Gyan Riley in this soulful Spanish classic.

June 22
Family Music Faire

A short kid-friendly concert featuring Britten’s Young Persons’ Guide to the Orchestra will be followed by a free lunch and faire activities for all to enjoy. A totally FREE event – bring the whole family!

ChickenBonz & Three Leg Torso

Local band ChickenBonez will kick off this energetic concert, followed by modern gypsy chamber music from the Portland-based group Three Leg Torso.

June 23
Classical II: Glazunov & Chopin

Solo piano and orchestra. Glazunov’s Summer and Chopin’s Concerto No.1.

June 28
Musical Book Club

Music and literature combine in this “book club” informal concert. American music of Copland, McKinley and a little ragtime and jazz.

June 29
The Music of Queen Symphonic Spectacular (outdoor)

The music of Queen played by guest soloists with our own Orchestra and Chorale. We will rock you!

June 30
Classical III: Beethoven & Bruch

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the MIM Chorale, along with the Bruch Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, featuring our own Concertmaster Robin Mayforth on violin.

July 1
Wet Ink

New works from our talented local composing community. Co-presented with the Nevada County Composers’ Cooperative.

July 3
Happy Birthday USA (outdoor)

Celebrate the Fourth of July with the MIM Chorale and Orchestra, with picnic at the Fairgrounds and all your favorite patriotic tunes.
