BriarPatch approved to build solar parking lot

BriarPatch Co-op Community Market has received the City of Grass Valley’s approval to use its parking lot to collect solar energy to power the store. The project is the first in a series of improvements planned for the next few years.

On Tuesday, January 26, the City’s Design Review Committee approved the cooperatively-owned grocery store’s proposal to install a 700-panel solar system directly over an expanded parking area.

“Using a cleaner energy source to power our store aligns with BriarPatch’s policy to be an environmental steward through our business practices,” said BriarPatch General Manager Chris Maher.

“Reducing our dependence on nonrenewable energy is a benefit for everyone,” he added, “and a great way to celebrate the Co-op’s 40th Anniversary.”

It is estimated that the new solar system will provide more than 35 percent of the store’s electricity needs. A steel structure would support the photovoltaic panels, while shading a large section of the lot.

Construction is planned to begin in June of 2016, to be completed by mid-September.

The parking area will be expanded to create 44 more spaces – a frequent request of BriarPatch’s shoppers — and will improve traffic flow as well as accommodating the solar system.

Earlier in January, BriarPatch and former owner Calloway Development announced that the Co-op had purchased the store building and the property it currently occupies at 290 Sierra College Drive. “Ownership makes it easier for the Co-op to move forward quickly on store improvements, such as this solar project,” said Maher.
