The indigenous people of Nevada County — the Nisenan — and Nevada County Campus of Sierra College, along with the California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP), plus the Firehouse No. 1 Museum in Nevada City invite the public to the forth annual Nisenan Heritage Day being held on Saturday, November 2, 2013, in the Multipurpose Center – Building N12 at the Sierra College Nevada County Campus in Grass Valley.

The day will be filled with California Indigenous Culture & Education with special focus on the Nisenan of the Nevada City Rancheria, which was known as “Campoodie” and located outside of Nevada City.

“We are proud to have this year’s Heritage Day event co-Sponsored by Sierra College!” says Shelly Covert, Secretary of the Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Council, “The Nisenan story belongs in our educational system from grammar school to college. We see the co-sponsorship with Sierra College as a huge first step in that direction. This year’s theme ‘Rekindling the Spirit’ speaks well to the reintroduction of Nisenan history into the educational system.”

Native American and academic/professional speakers will give individual presentations as well as panel style discussion about current events, and topics of historical & cultural relevance. Descendants from the Nevada City Rancheria, which was terminated in 1964, will talk about their history and stories of survival.

Traditional Dancers will return including direct descendants of Nisenan ‘Chief’ Louis Kelly. Master Basket Weavers will weave during the event and one can try their hand at preparing acorn flour.

Respected California Native artists will bring beautiful, quality jewelry, and art for show and sale. Local authors will be present for conversation and book sales. Local organizations, such as the Nevada County Historical Society, will provide information about themselves and their collaborative work with the Nisenan.
