Arts Calendar: Evolution of Organic, Pink Martini, and Wild & Scenic Art

EVOLUTION OF ORGANIC

FILMMAKER MARK KITCHELL (Berkeley in the Sixties, A Fierce Green Fire) presents a new film “Evolution of Organic,” Monday, October 23, at 7:45 p.m. at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

“It’s the story of organic agriculture, told by those who built the movement. A motley crew of back-to-the-landers, spiritual seekers and farmers’ sons and daughters reject chemical farming and set out to explore organic alternatives,” according to the filmmaker. “It’s a heartfelt journey of change, from a small band of rebels to a cultural transformation in the way we grow and eat food.”

This is the Nevada County premiere, unveiling the film in one of the organic heartlands. It is home to Peaceful Valley Farm Supply and the origins of Mountain Peoples Warehouse, which grew into UNFI, the largest distributor of organic and natural foods. Elizabeth “Izzy” Martin of The Sierra Fund, another local, also is featured in the film, battling pesticides for 20 years and helping to build the organic movement. The BriarPatch Co-op is sponsoring the event.

WILD & SCENIC ART

The 16th annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival is Jan. 11-15 in Nevada City and Grass Valley. The Festival is partnering with the Nevada County Arts Council for the seventh year for a Festival Art Exhibition, celebrating the intersection of arts and the environment. Regional artists’ environmental-themed artwork will be displayed at Festival venues, local wineries, breweries and art galleries during the five-day Festival and for most of January.
