Bravo Auburn Symphony!

THE FOOTHILLS IS EXPERIENCING A CULTURAL RENAISSANCE, and at the heart of that resurgence is the well-regarded Auburn Symphony. For more than two decades, the Auburn Symphony has delivered a level of quality orchestral symphony music usually reserved for major orchestras in urban centers.

All the while, this largely volunteer community orchestra has kept its small-town feel, while continuing to attract professional-level musicians from throughout the region. For the past 15 years, the symphony has thrived under the baton of Artistic Director and Maestro Michael Goodwin.

A few years back, celebrated guest conductor Enrique Batiz observed that the Auburn Symphony was “one of the finest community orchestras in the country.” Many agree that Goodwin’s dynamic presence — he never works off a score, for example — is a major factor.

“What’s impressive about Michael is his breadth of knowledge and his relationship with the audience,” says Dean Prigmore, a board member for the Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center. “Michael educates the audience here as to what’s going to be heard that evening and helps us all appreciate the music.”

During Goodwin’s tenure, the symphony has grown to more than 70 members, double its original size. Its reputation helps attract popular guest conductors and guest artists.

This season’s program includes three Masterworks Concert weekends, a trip back to the Mondavi Performing Arts Center in Davis, two Chamber Music concerts and the annual “Kinderkonzert,” aimed at young listeners.

This year the Auburn Symphony returns to the Mondavi Center on Sunday, March 13, where it will highlight Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The second Masterworks Concert Series performance is Jan. 15-16 at Placer High School. The Symphony also presents its KinderKonzert on Feb. 5 at Placer High School Auditorium.
