Sierra Stages’ new season includes Broadway hit The Producers

Nevada County theaters are going to be bursting with song and laughter in the new year. Christopher Durang’s comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan’s musical The Producers, and William Finn and James Lapine’s musical Falsettos make up the three award-winning plays and musicals in Sierra Stages’ seventh season.

The shows are among the most acclaimed productions in contemporary live theatre and each is a Nevada County premiere.

The 2015 season opens with the winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike playing March 5-28 at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City. Some of the show’s elements are derived from the works of Anton Chekhov, including several character names and the play’s setting includes a cherry orchard.

Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia are living a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up, while their sister Masha travels the world as a movie star. Just as their cleaning woman issues a warning about terrible events in their future, Masha returns for an unannounced visit with her 20-something “boy toy” Spike in tow—and so begins an unforgettable weekend.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is directed by Jeffrey Mason and features Casey Burke, Susan Mason, Robert Rossman, Karen Leigh Sharp, Rachel Wellman and Sharon Winegar.

From July 16-August 8, at the Nevada Theatre, Sierra Stages presents the winner of an unprecedented 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Producers. This Broadway hit is an over-the-top, irreverent musical comedy.

The third show in 2015 is the winner of Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score—Falsettos—at the Off Center Stage in Grass Valley from November 6-22. This infectious musical has charmed audiences for almost 50 years.
