Crowdsourcing supports redesign of a classic: cast iron cookware

Finex (finexusa.com) is soon to complete a very successful Kickstarter introduction of their debut product, an innovative octagonal 12-inch cast iron skillet — a long-overdue redesign of a true American classic.

The strong acceptance of its design and features has attracted over $130,000 from supporters in less than 30 days on Kickstarter. To date, Finex has achieved 500% funding with over 950 backers and will continue to seek additional support through Kickstarter through Nov. 17.

This skillet sports an octagonal shape, a patented quick-cooling wire-spring handle, and a smooth polished computer numerical control (CNC)-machined interior. It’s the first cast iron cookware fully designed and manufactured in the Pacific Northwest. Finex is based in Portland.

“There is a certain sweet symmetry to this all,” muses Mike Whitehead, Finex founder. “Crowdsourcing is truly supporting the quality redesign of a beloved classic like a cast iron skillet, in much the same way early American pioneers who cooked with those same skillets gathered together to raise communities.”

Finex confirmed everything is on track for its first round of shipments to backers by the December 15, 2013 target, just in time for the holidays. Broader availability is scheduled through select channels in Q1, 2014 at $195 manufacturer suggested retail price. Finex has a full set of premium cast iron skillets and matching lids in a range of diameters as well as a number of yet to be patented design driven cooking innovations in the design and planning stages.
