Longtime Sierra visitors mourn loss of popular family camp from Rim Fire
The rapidly growing Rim Fire burning through the Sierra engulfed the Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp on Sunday, which hosted generations of Berkeleyans and their friends since 1922.
Officials from the U.S. Forest Service confirmed this morning that most structures on site have burned. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s department sent deputies to personally inspect the site this Monday morning and will be providing an update to the City.
The fire came through the camp five days after City officials evacuated all campers and staff. While all those connected to this historic camp are heartbroken by the tragic news, the Berkeley Tuolumne Camp community has already come together to support one another.
Throughout this emergency, City of Berkeley camp staff members dealt with the situation with great poise, ensuring the safety of campers and staff and the preservation of camp history. Many important historical documents, such as photographs, wall hangings, the camp’s famous ‘tent chart’, and many other irreplaceable items were saved.
While the City has not yet had the opportunity to evaluate the damage, we will be working closely with U.S. Forest Service and the local jurisdiction on next steps.
