Music in the Mountains announces Peter Nowlen’s appointment as Artistic Advisor in press release

Music in the Mountains is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Nowlen to the role of Artistic Advisor. Nowlen currently serves as the Artistic Director for the VITA Academy in Sacramento, and has been a member of the University of California at Davis faculty since 1988 and the CSU Sacramento faculty since 1990.

As Artistic Advisor, Nowlen will guide the artistic planning of the 2014 season, including the appointment of guest conductors for the 2014 SummerFest, and work intimately with MIM Choral Director Ryan Murray.

MIM Board President Sherry Bartolucci states, “Acknowledging the artistic excellence of the orchestra, Peter’s appointment as Artistic Advisor is a natural and exciting fit with MIM. We are thrilled to have him on board.” Nowlen’s 2 year contract begins immediately.

Nowlen is an experienced arts leader with a career dedicated to revitalizing classical music. For Music in the Mountains, he pairs a creative vision with 25 years experience as a part of the organization and the Sierra foothills community to craft programs that will excite audiences. He has been a beloved and integral member of the MIM Festival Orchestra since 1997, currently holding the chair of principal horn.

Nowlen was a member of the French horn section of the Sacramento Symphony from 1987 to 1996. He is an active orchestral and chamber musician and an international solo prize winner. Horn performance credits include the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet orchestras, Symphony Silicon Valley, Sacramento Philharmonic and the International Orchestra of Italy Opera.

While the role of Artistic Advisor is a new model for MIM, it is not unusual in professional orchestras. “This is very flexible and dynamic direction for MIM,” states Bartolucci. “As Artistic Advisor, Pete will provide solid and inspired leadership in both programming and artistic excellence. I am personally thrilled for all the musicians and all music lovers.”

“I’m excited to work even more closely with my good friends at Music in the Mountains to bring exciting and engaging concert programs performed at the very highest professional level,” enthused Nowlen. “My goal is for Music in the Mountains to be at the very forefront of innovatively engaging communities and audiences with the classical music that I love.”

Music in the Mountains inspires and connects people of all ages through extraordinary classical music performances, community engagement, and music education.
