Beer Notes: Slice Beer, Grass Valley Brewfest and State Fair awards

SLICE BEER CO.
The former head brewer at Moonraker Brewing Co. in Auburn is helping to open a new brewery in Lincoln called Slice Beer Co. Slice co-founder Zach Frasher helped Moonraker became one of the area’s most popular breweries.

Slice plans to open in September, with a motto “culture of fresh,” pizza-slicer inspired tap handles, and hazy IPA and other craft beers. Slice will be sharing space at 665 6th St. with Old Town Pizza. BrewBilt Manufacturing in Grass Valley, often featured in our magazine, is supplying the brewery’s tanks.

ECO-FRIENDLY SIX-PACK RINGS
Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach, FL, is winning praise for creating biodegradable six-pack rings that save marine life and cut down on plastic waste.

The six-pack holder is made up of beer byproducts, such as barley and wheat remnants. If the rings end of in the ocean, it will safely disintegrate. Our region’s lakes and rivers would benefit from this kind of packaging.

STATE FAIR BEER AWARDS
Our region’s breweries were winners in the 2019 California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition.
Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co. of Nevada City won first place for its “Mother’s Beach Blonde Lager” in the Munich-style Helles category. Three Forks also won third place honors for “Purdon Porter,” highlighted in our magazine’s last issue.

Crooked Lane Brewing Co. in Auburn won second place for its “Thirsty Pretzel” beer in the dark lager category. Yolo Brewing Co. won first place for its “Die Hard is a Christmas Movie” beer in the American-style fruit beer” category. In the foothills, Amador Brewing Co. also won first-place for its “Dirty Blonde.”

GRASS VALLEY BREWFEST
The Grass Valley Downtown Association and Grass Valley Brewing Co.is hosting the town’s 1st annual Brewfest on September 14 from 1-5 p.m. Mill St. will be closed to vehicular traffic. The Brewfest also will feature food and music. Sales are limited to 500 tickets.
