Sierra Vintners’ wine trails on May 20, July 15 and September 23

THE FOOTHILLS HAVE SOME exceptional wine trail experiences on “roads less traveled”: “Grape Days of Summer” in Placer County, “Drink Pink” and “Big Crush” in Amador County, and “Passport” in El Dorado County, among others.

Sierra Vintners, which includes wineries in Placer and Nevada Counties, is offering three regional wine trail experiences in 2017—in May, July and September. This allows visitors to linger and enjoy wine, food and music at a smaller cluster of wineries in a single day, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., rather than feel rushed to enjoy all 19 of them at once.

In addition, the price is among the most affordable we’ve seen— just $70 (wine club members) or $80 for all three tours—in essence, three days of wine and food tasting spread throughout the year for as little as $23 per experience. This special ends May 19.

Otherwise, you can pay $30 (wine club members) or $35 to attend one wine trail. The price for a designated driver is $15 for each date.

The wineries offer delicious food pairings to go with their wines and music, along with shady picnic spots, often surrounded by a canopy of pine trees, such as Solune and Katoa (both on the May 20 tour). The winery at Smith Vineyard (also on May 20) is housed in a restored red barn that dates back to the early 1900s. Some of the wineries offer other activities, such as bocce ball at Bent Metal Winery.

Wineries such as Lucchesi and Double Oak (May 20), Naggiar, Pilot Peak and others are in picturesque settings where you can see wild- flowers, coveys of quail and other wildlife along the way, or in historic downtown locations such as Nevada City Winery (May 20).
