A “summer bucket list” for Truckee

WITH A MOTTO “BASE CAMP for a big life,” Truckee and the surrounding area offers exceptional outdoor adventures, shopping, dining, and arts and culture.

The town is booming too. Examples include the Truckee Railyard project, which is going to double the size of the 150-year-old downtown core.

The project includes new housing, artist lofts, retail, a new movie theater called Art Haus, a brew pub, and streetscape, among other features. Outside of downtown, a new 40,000-sq.-ft. Raley’s supermarket and free-standing retail building is in the works, with 224 parking spaces.

“The Railyard Project — it’s a converted rail yard — shows that communities can overcome NIMBYism, environmental litigation and other California obstacles in pursuit of transformational development,” as a columnist wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Like others, we enjoy all Truckee has to offer. Here’s our bucket list of things to:

DOWNTOWN SHOPPING
Truckee has an eclectic collection of enterprising “mom and pop” retailers. Examples include Cooking Gallery, a gourmet cooking store; Cabona’s, a clothing store; and Totally Board for skateboards and snowboards.

DOWNTOWN DINING
The town’s restaurants include award-winning fine dining restaurants such as Trokay, as well as burger joints with locally sourced beef such as Burger Me.

BEER AND WINE TASTING
Truckee is home to the Pour House Wine Shop and FiftyFifty Brewing Co., two popular businesses for libations.

ARTS AND CULTURE
In 2017, Truckee was awarded a “California Cultural District” designation by the California Arts Council after a highly competitive process that created 14 districts in the state.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA’S LARGEST BIKE PARK
With 100 miles of trails, Northstar California is home to some of the state’s best downhill mountain bike terrain.

Carmel Gallery
Carmel Gallery features a stunning collection of fine art landscape photography by Olof & Elizabeth Carmel, along with a unique collection of sculpture, woodwork, jewelry, and glass art.
