Good eats at Lefty’s Fry House in Grass Valley

Lefty’s Fry House in Grass Valley opened this afternoon, and we were one of the first customers. We ordered “to go,” and I squeezed some details into our magazine at the 11 hour as it went onto the presses. Then we ate.

The casual dining restaurant is located at 840 East Main Street, near Sierra Cinemas. It is the creation John Cammack and Chris Duncan, the two left-handed chefs and owners of Lefty’s Grill in Nevada City.

The imaginative menu at Lefty’s Fry House includes “almost famous” beer-battered fish and chips (also served at Lefty’s Grill on Fridays);  shrimp and chips; buttermilk fried chicken thighs; grilled chicken thighs with garlic citrus; flash-fried calamari, and homemade clam chowder, among other items.

The sandwiches include “the Mediterranean,” “The Southern” and “The Baja,” served on naan bread with various combinations of homemade sauces, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and a choice of protein.

Salads include a house salad (chopped romaine and baby kale with cucumbers, tomatoes, pickled onions and croutons); a Caesar Salad, and Greek Citrus Salad.

Salad toppers and sandwich choices (pick one for a sandwich or add onto salad) include fried but also grilled items. Examples include buttermilk fried chicken, grilled chicken thighs with garlic citrus; grilled fish; beer-battered fish; and grilled garlic, citrus prawns. The dessert list is beignets, cheesecake and chocolate almond torte.

I had the fish and chips, and my wife Shannon had the fried chicken. We enjoyed both entrees, along with the side of homemade coleslaw and fries (with some skin on them).

We also sampled the “Hill Billy beignets” (two buttermilk biscuits, quartered, fried and tossed with powdered sugar and served with a delicious mint chardonnay strawberry sauce).

Lefty’s Fry House serves house red and white wine, craft beer, domestic beer and other beverages. It is a welcome and imaginative addition to the local dining scene.
